Feb 27 (Daily reading: Numbers 8-10) I found a personal identification with 8:19, “I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the sons of Israel, to perform the service of the sons of Israel…” From the perspective of someone who received God’s call to be a pastor in His church, I have seen many whom I considered to be a “gift” of the Lord “to perform the service” of the Lord. We are all called to serve, but some just naturally “go the second mile” in all that they do in the church. What a gift such people are to the church and to its leaders!
9:15-23 is a powerful lesson that God has given us. God’s presence was always visible for His people in “the cloud…by day, and the appearance of fire by night. Whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent…the sons of Israel would set out…as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped…Whether it was two days, a month, or a year…At the command of the LORD they camped, and at the command of the LORD they set out.” We should follow God’s leadership in all we do. We should stay, or go, only at His command. He, as our Lord, has the right to interrupt our plans, and to move us in whatever direction He desires. What is important is that His presence is always with us wherever we go and whatever we do!
Moses in his last days reminded the people: “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deut. 31:8, NIV).
