(Daily reading: Genesis 4-7) We have a choice, to imitate Cain or Noah. God said to Cain, “And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it” (Gen. 4:7). The writer of the Hebrew letter wrote: “Encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Heb. 3:13). Satan’s temptations are always “crouching at the door.” I once heard some advice that has always stuck with me: “When Satan knocks, send Jesus to answer the door!” One of the best ways we can encourage one another to resist temptation is by following James’s counsel: “Pray for one another” (Ja. 5:16). This will enable us, by God’s grace, to choose to be like Noah. “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God” (Gen. 6:9). We have received the Holy Spirit, so walking with God is a daily option!
